Brick and Block Calculator

By the CalcMundi team · Updated October 22, 2026 · Formulas checked against standard financial math

Enter the wall size, the openings and the brick or block type.

How it is calculated

Bricks per sq ft = 144 ÷ ((face length + joint) × (face height + joint)). A standard modular brick (8 × 2⅔ in with mortar) needs about 6.75 per sq ft; an 8 × 16 in concrete block about 1.125 per sq ft.

Example

A 20 × 8 ft wall with one door (21 sq ft) has 139 sq ft and needs about 985 bricks with 5% extra.

These are estimates to plan your purchase. Check measurements on site and follow the manufacturer’s instructions and local building codes.

Frequently asked questions

Do I include the mortar joint?
