Drywall Calculator

By the CalcMundi team · Updated October 22, 2026 · Formulas checked against standard financial math

Enter the wall size, the doors and windows to subtract and whether you are boarding one or both sides.

How it works

  • Area = length × height − openings, times the number of sides
  • Sheets = area with waste ÷ sheet area (4 × 8 ft = 32 ft²)
  • Studs = length ÷ 16 in + 1
  • Screws: about 30 per sheet

Example

A 16 × 8 ft partition with a 21 ft² door, boarded on both sides with 10% waste, needs 8 sheets, 13 studs, 32 ft of track and about 240 screws.

Tips

  • Use moisture-resistant board in bathrooms and kitchens.
  • For ceilings, choose “one side” and use the room size.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use 4×8 or 4×12 sheets?

Longer sheets mean fewer joints and less taping, but they are heavier to handle.

How much extra should I buy?

10% covers cuts and mistakes on simple walls; add more for many openings or angles.
