The half rule
The advice is to keep your waist under half your height (a ratio below 0.5). From 0.5 to 0.59 the health risk is increased, and from 0.6 it is high.
Example
A 34 in waist and 67 in height give a ratio of 0.51, just above the target.

Frequently asked questions
BMI or waist-to-height?
They complement each other. Waist-to-height better reflects belly fat, which BMI does not see.
