Why it is not just “times 7”
The old “1 dog year = 7 human years” rule is a myth. Dogs mature very fast in the first two years and then age more slowly, and big dogs age faster than small ones.
How we calculate
- Year 1: about 15 human years.
- Year 2: add 9, for 24.
- Each year after: add 4 (small), 5 (medium), 6 (large) or 7 (giant).
We also show a 2020 DNA-based estimate: 16 × ln(age) + 31.
Example
A 5-year-old medium dog is about 39 in human years: 24 + 3 × 5. The DNA formula gives about 57.
