By the CalcMundi team · Updated October 22, 2026 · Formulas checked against standard financial math

Choose what to find and enter the other two values. Works for maps, floor plans, models and topo maps.

Formula

At 1:24,000, 1 inch on the map is 24,000 inches in reality, or 2,000 feet. Real distance = map distance × scale denominator.

Example

3 inches on a 1:24,000 topo map is 6,000 feet, about 1.14 miles.

Common scales

  • 1/4" = 1' (1:48) – house plans.
  • 1:24,000 – USGS 7.5-minute topo maps.
  • 1:1,000,000 or smaller – state and country maps.

Frequently asked questions

Large or small scale?

A large scale (1:1,000) shows a small area in detail; a small scale (1:1,000,000) shows a large area with little detail.

What about a bar scale?
