How we calculate
First we estimate the resting energy need: 70 × weight in kg0.75. Then we multiply by a factor for the situation (neutered, active, puppy, weight loss) and divide by the food’s calories per kg.
Example
A neutered 30 lb dog on a 3,600 kcal/kg food needs about 220 g (7.8 oz) a day. A 30 lb bag lasts about 61 days.
Tips
- Weigh the food with a kitchen scale; scoops are not accurate.
- Treats count: keep them under 10% of daily calories.
- Weigh your pet monthly and adjust.
