Average Daily Gain (ADG) Calculator

By the CalcMundi team · Updated October 22, 2026 · Formulas checked against standard financial math

Enter the weight at the first and second weighing and the days between them.

Formula

Average daily gain = (current weight − starting weight) ÷ days. Days to target = (target − current weight) ÷ ADG.

Example

A steer that went from 650 to 850 lb in 100 days gained 2 lb per day. To reach 1,000 lb it needs 75 more days. With a 62% carcass yield, the carcass would weigh about 527 lb today.

How to improve the gain

  • Good pasture, water and mineral salt all the time.
  • Supplement in the dry season.
  • Weigh at the same time of day, ideally after the same fasting.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good ADG?

On pasture, 1 to 1.5 lb a day is common; with supplement, 1.5 to 2.2 lb; in a feedlot, 3 to 4 lb.

Why did my result come out negative?

The animal lost weight between the weighings, which can happen in the dry season or after illness.
