How bases work
Each position is worth the base raised to the power of its place, counting from 0 on the right. In binary, 1101 = 1×8 + 1×4 + 0×2 + 1×1 = 13. In hexadecimal, the letters A to F stand for 10 to 15.
Example
255 in decimal is 1111 1111 in binary, FF in hexadecimal and 377 in octal. It fits in 8 bits, the size of one byte.
Where it is used
- Binary: how computers store everything.
- Hexadecimal: colors in web design (#FF8800), memory addresses and MAC addresses.
- Octal: file permissions on Linux (chmod 755).
