Formula
Time = size in bits ÷ speed in bits per second. Internet speed is measured in megabits (Mbps) and files in megabytes (MB). A byte is 8 bits, so 100 Mbps downloads at most 12.5 MB per second.
Example
A 50 MB file at 100 Mbps takes 4 seconds. A 4 GB game takes 5 min 20 s at full speed.
Why it takes longer in real life
Wi-Fi far from the router, other devices on the network and the server you download from can all slow it down. That is why we also show the time at 80% and 50% of the speed.
Frequently asked questions
Mbps vs. MB/s?
Mbps is megabits per second; MB/s is megabytes per second. Divide Mbps by 8 to get MB/s.
What about uploads?
Same math, using your plan’s upload speed, which is usually lower.
