Formulas
- By followers = (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ followers × 100
- By reach = the same interactions ÷ accounts reached × 100
Example
A post with 820 likes, 45 comments, 30 shares and 60 saves on an account with 25,000 followers has 955 interactions: an engagement rate of 3.82%, which is high. With a reach of 9,000 accounts, the rate by reach is 10.61%.
Which rate to use
The rate by followers is easy to compare between accounts and is what brands often ask for. The rate by reach shows how interesting the post was to the people who saw it.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good engagement rate?
As a rough guide, 1% to 3% is average and above 3% is high. Small accounts usually have higher rates than big ones.
Should I count views?
For videos, some people use views instead of followers. Use the same method every time so you can compare.
Why does the rate fall as an account grows?
A bigger audience includes more casual followers who interact less.
