Formulas
- Posts = length ÷ spacing + 1
- Wire = length × strands + 5% for ties and slack
- Rolls = wire ÷ wire per roll, rounded up
Example
A quarter-mile fence (1,320 ft) with posts every 8 ft and 4 strands needs 166 posts, 5,544 ft of wire (5 rolls of 1,320 ft) and 664 staples.
Tips
- Corners and gates need sturdier brace posts.
- Cattle fences often use 4 or 5 strands; horses do better with smooth or woven wire.
Frequently asked questions
Does a curved fence change the count?
Measure along the curve. The count is the same as for a straight line of that length.
How deep should posts go?
A common rule is a third of the post length, or at least 2 to 3 feet.
