Pool Volume and Chlorine Calculator

By the CalcMundi team · Updated October 22, 2026 · Formulas checked against standard financial math

Pick the shape, enter the size and the depth at both ends, and choose your chlorine product.

Formulas

  • Rectangular: length × width × average depth
  • Round: π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × average depth
  • Oval: π ÷ 4 × length × width × average depth
  • 1 cubic foot = 7.48 gallons

Example

A 32 × 16 ft pool, 3.5 ft deep at one end and 5.5 ft at the other, holds about 17,235 gallons. Raising free chlorine by 2 ppm takes about 201 g (7.1 oz) of 65% granular chlorine.

Chlorine basics

Keep free chlorine between 1 and 3 ppm and pH between 7.2 and 7.6. Sun, heat and many swimmers use chlorine faster. Always follow the label of your product.

Frequently asked questions

Why use the average depth?

A pool with a sloped floor holds about the same as a flat pool at the average depth.

How long does it take to fill?

It depends on the hose. A garden hose often delivers 500 to 1,000 liters (130 to 260 gallons) per hour.
